No visit to Athens is complete without ascending the Acropolis. We made sure to arrive early in the morning to beat the crowds and the afternoon sun. Standing before the Parthenon, it is impossible not to be awed by the sheer scale and architectural precision of this ancient temple. 🗿

Just below the hill, the Acropolis Museum is a modern marvel. Its glass floors allow you to look down onto the excavated ruins of an ancient Athenian neighborhood. My husband was particularly fascinated by the Caryatids the iconic statues of maidens that served as columns for the Erechtheion. 🏺

🏘️ The Heart of Old Athens: Plaka and Anafiotika

At the foot of the Acropolis lies Plaka, the oldest and most charming district in the city. Its labyrinth of narrow, flower-filled streets is a delight to wander through. 🌺

We found a hidden gem within Plaka called Anafiotika. This tiny neighborhood was built by settlers from the island of Anafi, and with its white-washed walls and blue shutters, it feels exactly like a Greek island hidden in the middle of a metropolis. It is the perfect spot for a quiet moment away from the tourist buzz. 🐈‍⬛

🍷 Athenian Nights: Psirri and Gastronomy

As the sun sets, the city’s energy shifts to areas like Psirri. This once-industrial neighborhood is now the center of Athens' nightlife and culinary scene. We spent our evenings in cozy tavernas, enjoying a traditional Greek salad and Moussaka. 🥘

My spouse particularly enjoyed the local wine selection, especially the crisp whites from nearby Attica. The atmosphere in Psirri is electric, with live music often spilling out into the streets, making every dinner feel like a celebration. 🎶

🎒 Essential Tips for Your Athens Trip

  • The Multi-Site Ticket: 🎫 If you plan on seeing the major ruins like the Ancient Agora and the Temple of Olympian Zeus, buy the combined ticket. It saves a significant amount of money and is valid for five days.

  • Sunrise at Lycabettus Hill: 🚠 For the most spectacular view of the city, take the funicular or hike up Lycabettus Hill. Watching the sunrise over the Saronic Gulf with the Acropolis in the distance is an experience you will never forget. 🌅

  • Wear Proper Walking Shoes: 👟 The marble paths in the ancient sites can be very slippery, even when dry. A pair of sturdy, comfortable walking shoes with good grip is essential for navigating the terrain.

  • Stay Hydrated: 💧 Athens can get very hot, especially in the summer. Keep a reusable water bottle with you; the city has many public fountains where you can refill for free.

🏨 Featured Accommodation Recommendation

For a stay that offers world-class service and a view that will leave you speechless, The Electra Metropolis is a top choice. Located in the heart of the city, its rooftop garden and pool offer an unobstructed, front-row view of the Acropolis. It is the perfect place to enjoy a cocktail while watching the ancient temple light up at night. ✨
