While Paris may be the city of lights, Lyon is undoubtedly the city of flavors. Situated at the confluence of the Rhône and Saône rivers, Lyon is a place where history is etched into every stone and every meal is a celebration. It is a city that manages to feel grand and intimate all at once. 🍷

Last spring, my spouse and I spent a few days exploring this French gem. We quickly discovered that Lyon is a city of layers—from the Roman ruins on the hills to the Renaissance courtyards of the old town, there is always something hidden just out of sight. 🏛️

🥐 A Culinary Pilgrimage: Les Halles de Lyon Paul Bocuse

You cannot visit Lyon without acknowledging its food culture. We started our journey at Les Halles de Lyon Paul Bocuse, an indoor food market named after the legendary French chef. Walking through the aisles is a sensory experience like no other. 🧀

We sampled Saint-Marcellin cheese, fresh oysters, and the famous pink pralines that color the city's pastry shop windows. My spouse was particularly impressed by the precision of the local butchers and the sheer variety of charcuterie. It is the perfect place to pick up picnic supplies before heading to the park. 🥖

🏘️ Vieux Lyon and the Mystery of the Traboules

Vieux Lyon (Old Lyon) is one of the most extensive Renaissance neighborhoods in Europe. Its narrow, cobblestone streets are charming, but the real magic lies behind the doors. Lyon is famous for its Traboules—secret covered passageways that run through buildings and courtyards. 🚪

Originally used by silk weavers to transport their goods while staying dry, these passageways are now a delight for explorers. We spent a whole afternoon pushing open heavy wooden doors to find spiral staircases and hidden Italian-style galleries. It feels like being part of a secret club as you navigate the city through its internal veins. 🕵️‍♂️

⛪ Fourvière Hill: The Best View in the City

For the best perspective of Lyon, we took the funicular (affectionately called "Ficelle" by locals) up to Fourvière Hill. The Basilica of Notre-Dame de Fourvière is a stunning piece of architecture, with its white stone and golden mosaics that glitter in the sunlight. ⛪

Standing on the terrace outside the basilica, you can see the entire city spread out below, with the red roofs of the old town and the modern towers of Part-Dieu in the distance. Just a short walk away is the Ancient Theatre of Fourvière, a massive Roman amphitheater that is still used for performances today. 🎭

🎒 Essential Tips for Your Lyon Trip

  • The Lyon City Card: 🎫 This is a must. It covers all public transport (trams, buses, metro, and funiculars) and gives you free entry to most museums. It even includes a guided tour of the Traboules, which is very helpful if you don't want to get lost!

  • Dine in a "Bouchon": 🍷 For an authentic experience, look for a certified "Bouchon Lyonnais." These are traditional restaurants serving hearty, local fare like Quenelles or Salade Lyonnaise. Be warned: the portions are generous and the atmosphere is wonderfully boisterous!

  • Comfortable Footwear is Key: 👟 Between the cobblestones of Vieux Lyon and the hills of Croix-Rousse, you will be doing a lot of climbing. A pair of stylish, broken-in walking shoes is essential for navigating the steep streets.

  • Visit the Parc de la Tête d'Or: 🌳 This is one of the largest urban parks in France. It features a free zoo and a beautiful botanical garden. It is the perfect spot for a quiet afternoon after the hustle and bustle of the city center. 🦒
