When people think of traveling to Bulgaria, they usually head straight to the capital Sofia or the sunny Black Sea beaches. However, during my latest trip through the Northeast, I stumbled upon Razgrad a city that perfectly blends ancient Roman ruins with a professional, high-energy sports culture. 🏛️⚽
If you are looking for a destination that is off the beaten path but packed with character and authentic Balkan charm, here is why Razgrad should be on your travel list.
🏺 A Walk Through Ancient History: Abritus
The highlight of my visit was undoubtedly the Abritus Archeological Reserve. This was one of the most important Roman cities in the province of Moesia Inferior. Walking among the ancient columns and massive stone walls makes you feel like you have stepped back 2,000 years in time. 🏺
The Gold Treasure: Don’t skip the museum on-site! It houses a world-renowned hoard of late Roman gold coins that will leave you speechless. 💰✨
🕌 Architectural Beauty: Ibrahim Pasha Mosque
Located right in the heart of the city, the Ibrahim Pasha Mosque is an incredible piece of Ottoman architecture. It is considered one of the largest and most impressive in the Balkans. Even while under restoration, its grand domes and intricate stonework are a dream for any photographer. 📸🕌
⚽ The Home of Champions: Ludogorets Arena

You can’t talk about Razgrad without mentioning Ludogorets. 🦅 For a city of this size to produce a football team that consistently competes in the Champions League is legendary. My spouse and I managed to catch a game at the Huvepharma Arena, and the local pride is absolutely infectious! 🏟️
🍲 Authentic Balkan Flavors
The food in Razgrad is hearty and comforting. We spent our afternoons in traditional taverns enjoying:
Shopska Salad: Fresh veggies topped with a mountain of white Bulgarian cheese. 🥗
Banitsa: A flaky, savory pastry that is the ultimate breakfast treat. 🥧
Bulgar Yogurt: Locally made and incredibly creamy—you haven't tasted real yogurt until you've tried it here! 🥛
🌳 Relaxing in the City Park
Razgrad is home to one of the largest and most beautiful city parks in the country. It’s the perfect place for a quiet morning walk or a quick coffee while watching the world go by. 🌲☕
🏨 Recommended Place to Stay
If you are planning an overnight stay, there is one place that stands out for its comfort, modern design, and perfect location:
Hotel Cartoon Razgrad 🎨 This is arguably the most stylish and well-equipped hotel in the city. It offers spacious, modern rooms and is situated right in the center, making it easy to walk to all the major historical sites and the stadium. The staff is exceptionally friendly, and the on-site restaurant serves fantastic local and international dishes. It is the perfect home base for your Bulgarian adventure! ⭐⭐⭐⭐ https://www.booking.com/hotel/bg/cartoon-razgrad.tr.html
